Almost everyone agrees on these points:
- Abstaining from sex is an acceptable way to prevent a child from being born
- Killing a child after birth is an unacceptable way to get rid of an unwanted child
The disagreement is about where the line between acceptable and unacceptable is...
ZA's approach most seems to be that it is not a human until around the time that a viable birth can take place (which is around 21 weeks (there is a 50% chance of survival at 24 weeks, much lower at 21 weeks)) (and therefore not entitled to the human right to life...) (ZA allows abortion with no reason up to 13 weeks and with good reasons given up to 20 weeks). (Thalamic brain connections starts forming around 26 weeks, allowing the fetus to feel pain)
There are also sections 12(2) and 27(1) of the constitution.
Access to contraceptives (preferably the long-acting kind) is the best method to prevent abortions. Like with prostitution and drug use, banning it does not stop it from happening, it just makes it more dangerous for everyone involved.
