Might be the wine talking, but in the South African context 'enlightened self interest' as it pertains to the Israel/Palestinian conflict would mean specifically NOT taking sides or having any non-neutral policy at all unless it happens to benefit us as a nation. Not so?
Historically our old regime was aligned with Israel, and it was decidedly positive for the regime at the time. Accelerated arms and even nuclear weapons development gave them a strong counter to sanctions and proxy wars by the communists wishing to overthrow them. That would not have been possible with a pro-Palestine policy, yet was made possible by Israel.
In a similarly cold calculated fashion we would need to know what policy w.r.t. Israel/Palestine directly benefits us the most.
